What to Do When You Have an Electrical Emergency in Sidcup

Published February 2025 · 8 min read

Electrical problems don't always happen at a convenient time. Whether it's a complete power loss, a persistent burning smell or electrics that keep tripping, knowing what to do — and what not to do — in the immediate aftermath can make a significant difference to both safety and the speed of resolution.

This guide covers the most common urgent electrical situations in Sidcup homes and rental properties, what to do first, when to call an electrician and what to expect.

First: Know What Is and Isn't an Immediate Emergency

Not every electrical problem is an immediate emergency — and misidentifying a routine fault as one can result in unnecessary call-out charges. A genuine electrical emergency is a situation where there is an immediate risk to safety that cannot be managed by simply switching something off.

Situations that warrant immediate action include:

  • A burning smell with no obvious source (appliance unplugged, room vacated)
  • Visible scorch marks around a socket, switch or consumer unit
  • Sparking from a socket, switch or the consumer unit itself
  • Any situation involving water and electricity together
  • A circuit that trips immediately on reset and cannot be isolated

If any of the above apply and you cannot safely isolate the circuit, leave the area, turn off the main switch at the consumer unit if it is safe to do so, and contact emergency services if needed. The 105 power cut line (run by the electricity networks) can also advise.

Power Loss to the Whole Property

If you lose power to the entire property, the first check is your consumer unit. Look for any RCD or MCB that has tripped to the off position. If you find one, unplug appliances from the affected circuit before attempting to reset it. If it resets and holds, there is likely a faulty appliance on that circuit — test them one by one to identify which.

If the switch won't reset, or trips again immediately, do not force it. There is an underlying fault that needs proper diagnosis. Contact us to arrange a visit.

If your consumer unit appears unaffected, check whether your neighbours have power — if they don't, it may be a street-level power cut. Call 105 to report or check status.

Power Loss to Part of the Property

Partial power loss — a room or set of sockets not working while others are — is usually caused by a tripped MCB or RCD at the consumer unit, or by a wiring fault within the affected circuit. Follow the same process as above: identify the affected circuit at the consumer unit, unplug appliances, attempt to reset. If it won't reset, contact an electrician.

Burning Smell

A burning smell from anywhere in the property should be treated seriously. The first step is to identify the source — check each room and appliance. If the smell appears to be coming from a socket, switch or the consumer unit rather than an appliance, switch off at the consumer unit and contact us.

Do not use a socket or switch that smells of burning, is warm to the touch, or shows any discolouration. These are signs of overheating at the connection, which can progress to a fire if left unaddressed.

Repeatedly Tripping Electrics

If a circuit keeps tripping — whether an MCB or RCD — there is a fault that needs to be found and fixed. Simply resetting the board repeatedly is not a solution and can mask a developing problem. We carry out systematic fault diagnosis to find the root cause: which circuit is responsible, whether the fault is in the fixed wiring or in a connected appliance, and exactly where in the circuit the fault lies.

Sparking Sockets or Switches

A brief spark when plugging in an appliance to a live socket is normal. Persistent sparking, or sparking when nothing is being plugged in, is not. Switch off the socket at the wall (or isolate the circuit at the consumer unit) and contact an electrician. Sparking can indicate a loose connection, a damaged accessory or a fault on the circuit.

Water and Electricity

If water has entered a light fitting, socket or switch — through a leak, flood or condensation — do not use the affected accessories until they have been checked. Switch off the relevant circuit at the consumer unit and contact us. Water ingress can significantly reduce insulation resistance and create a risk of electric shock.

What to Tell Us When You Call

When you contact us about an urgent electrical issue in Sidcup or the surrounding area, it helps to tell us:

  • What you have noticed — burning smell, tripping, power loss, sparking
  • Whether it is affecting the whole property or just part of it
  • What the consumer unit looks like — any switches in the off position?
  • Whether you have already tried resetting, and what happened
  • Your postcode

This helps us advise you on whether the situation is something you can manage safely while waiting for a visit, or whether it requires more immediate action.
